Through research and development, Posco has successfully mass produced the super-stainless steel alloy S31254 for seawater. The steel contains higher levels of molybdenum and nitrogen, providing high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, as well as high strength compared to conventional stainless steel.
Posco said that the company set up a cross-functional team last year to develop super-alloy stainless steel, which was successfully mass-produced earlier this year. The company has supplied steel to local scrubber design and manufacturing companies, including Hyundai Heavy Industries Power Systems and Kangrim Heavy Industries.
Superalloy stainless steel S31254 is used to make a sulfur scrubber that removes sulfur from the effluent when burning fuel so that the vessel can continue to use high sulfur fuel. According to the guidelines of the International Maritime Organization to be implemented, from January 2020, ships must use marine fuels with a sulfur content of no more than 0.5%, well below the current 3.5% ceiling. As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established strict rules to remove sulfur and harmful emissions from ships, the sulfur scrubber will be used in more than 12,000 ships over the next five years.
Shipping companies can choose to use expensive fuels with lower sulfur content, install scrubbers on existing ships, or convert fleets to LNG-powered vessels to meet the requirements of this guide.
